TES Electronic TES-1394 Triaxial ELF ElectroMagnetic Field Tester

This great three axis meter has a bandwidth of 30 Hz to 2000 Hz. The accuracy is as follows: ±(3%+3d) at 50Hz or 60HZ, ±(5%+3d) at 40Hz to 200HZ, -3dB at 30Hz to 2kHZ. The "datalogging" meter can store up to 999 data points and then has the ability to connect to a PC through the use of an included RS-232 optical interface cable and provided software. The TES-1394 will run for approximately 100 minutes on 6 x AAA batteries.

Trifield Natural EMF Meter - Click to ENLARGE
TriField Natural EMF Meter

The TriField Natural EMF Meter, sometimes referred to as "The Ghost Detector", is one step beyond the average EMF meter for parapsychological and paranormal field work. It is one of the most proficient and prominent quality instruments commonly employed by professional "ghost hunters".
The TriField Natural EMF Meter detects radio/microwaves and changes in extremely weak static (DC or "natural") electric and magnetic fields. Using both a needle type meter and audible tone, it detects: radio transmitters, geomagnetic storms, unusual magnetic solar activity, electrical activity of thunderstorms, leaky microwave ovens, magnetized rocks or bed frames, analog cellular phone EMF output, and concealed surveillance bugs.
Because the TriField Natural EMF Meter can sometimes detect the electrical presence of a person (occasionally a person will carry no electric charge and thus be "invisible" to the meter), this versatile meter is often used in paranormal studies. Human beings and animals usually emit an electric field which is easily detectable using the meter. In fact, the instrument can be utilized as a motion-activated intruder alarm. This extreme sensitivity allows the meter to detect the presence of a person through a wall. Though not foolproof in this capacity, the extraordinary sensitivity is of interest to researchers in the field of parapsychology, especially "ghost hunters".
The TriField Natural EMF Meter is sensitive to changes in electric fields of as little as 3 V/m with a full scale deflection at 1000 V/m. It can measure magnetic field changes as small as 0.5% of the Earth's magnetic field (2.5 mG) and as high as 100 microtesla (1000 mG). RF sensitive down to 0.01 mW/cm², with a full needle deflection at 1 mW/cm² over the frequency range of 100 kHz to 2.5 GHz.. The TriField Natural EMF Meter runs on a standard alkaline 9v battery which will last for approximately 50 hours of use.

Elektrosmog Multidetector II Professional

The German-made Mutidetector II Professional (A.K.A. the Multidetektor II Profi) is one of our favorite EMF detectors. The meter itself looks and feels more like a stove lighter, but that doesn't stop it from being a wonderful tool for use in ghost hunting. It has a series of colored lights which allow one to check its reading in complete darkness. The meter also makes a sound when the readings are maxed out. With the click of one of its switches, the settings can be changed to read electrical or magnetic fields. It also comes equipped with a frequency filter which allows one to switch between a highpass filter (measures fields from 500 Hz to 400 kHz) and a lowpass filter (measures fields 5 Hz to 500 Hz.) The third switch on the meter changes the sensitivity of the meter.

Gauss Master
Gauss Master - Gauss Meter

The Gauss Master is the most widely utilized EMF (Electromagnetic Field) detector by paranormal investigators and "ghost hunters". The Gauss Master is a hand-held detector that offers an easy to read gauge, unique built-in audio signal and auto shut-off feature. It simple to use and is a great way to pick up electronic and magnetic fields. The theory is that when ghosts or spirits are present, they disrupt the electromagnetic fields. The Gauss Master will detect these disruptions.
The Gauss Master is a great EMF detector for beginning "ghost hunters", because of the fact that it is very affordable. It sells for around $40. It displays readings from 0.1 mG to 10 mG cycling between 50 Hz to 60 Hz. (2 mode operation). The downside of this meter is that it is calibrated to pick up only signals cycling between 50-60 Hz and the fact that it automatically powers itself down after 10 minutes. The Gauss Master runs on a 9V battery.

CellSensor RF Sensor and Gauss Meter
CellSensor - RF Sensor and Gauss Meter

The CellSensor is a dual-use meter featuring both cell phone frequency RF measurement (calibrated around 835 MHz) as well as a single-axis EMF Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Gauss meter (calibrated around 50-60 Hz fields). The RF meter measures the intensity of radiation from cellular as well as GSM mobile phones and is calibrated at 835 MHz (with an accuracy of ±3dB). The CellSensor comes with a remote probe with a 2 foot extension cord allowing the user extended reach to any area while keeping an eye on field strength. It features two analog scales: NORMAL sensitivity (0-5 mG) and HIGH Sensitivity (0-50 mG) with a relatively flat frequency response curve. Both the RF and Gauss meter provide audio sound (with volume control) and a large flashing light which is great for low-light conditions. The sound and light correspond to field strength.
The downside of this meter is that it will sometimes not zero properly. The CellSensor sells for around $40.00.

E.L.F. Zone Gauss Meter
Enzone ELF-Zone Electromagnetic Field Detector

This meter is a favorite among beginning "ghost hunters", because of the fact that it is very affordable. It sells for around $15. The E.L.F. Zone meter measures ELF/VLF magnetic fields in the frequency range of 20 - 10 kHz, with a minimum sensitivity of .25 mG. This meter is very useful in locating "hot spots" at a location. Three LED lights which are easy to see in the dark indicate field strength:

Green: Little or no activity (0 mG - 2.5 mG)
Yellow: Moderate activity (2.5 mG - 7 mG)
Red: High activity (7 mG or more)

The E.L.F. Zone Gauss Meter is a single-axis sensor. It has an on/off toggle switch and runs on a 9V battery.

Quorum Room Guardian - Motion Detector
Timex Helix WRKS Wristwatch

The Timex Helix WRKS wristwatch is an excellent tool for ghost hunters to while conducting a paranormal investigation. Beyond its obvious use as a way to tell time, the Helix WRKS has a built-in thermometer and barometer (the temperature and barometric pressure are automatically updated every minute.) It also features a built-in digital compass, altimeter, and chronograph. Another great thing about this watch is that it can be viewed in complete darkness via its Indiglo (electroluminescent) Night-Mode feature, which when activated, will illuminate the watch for four seconds with the press of a button.

Quorum Room Guardian - Motion Detector
Homes HHG-50 Humidity Monitor

The Holmes HHG-50 is a very small and inexpensive humidity monitor. It can be found for under $5. Any experienced "ghost hunter" knows that high humidity levels in the air can cause false orbs in photos. Monitoring the humidity level at a location is always good practice.

Quorum Room Guardian - Motion Detector
Quorum Room Guardian Motion Detector

The Quorum Room Guardian uses dual technology to detect intruders and activity in a controlled area: 360° Passive Infrared motion detection and Infrasonic forced entry detection. Completely self-contained and portable, the Room Guardian operates on a standard 9V battery or included AC adapter. The Room Guardian can be mounted on a wall, floor or ceiling, or simply placed on a tabletop. The detector can be armed and disarmed from up to 30 feet away with the included handheld remote.
PIR technology uses infrared radiation to detect the motion of warm bodies. Infrasonic detector measures the shock wave produces by a window or door opening and you can adjust the sensitivity. The Quorum Room Guardian produces a very loud (100 dB) alarm for 30 seconds when activity is detected. Motion detectors are great for paranormal work for monitoring an area for activity. The best motion detector for the price… it sells for under $20.

C.E.M. DT-8810 Infrared Thermometer
C.E.M. DT-8810 Infrared Thermometer

The C.E.M. DT-8810 Non-Contact I/R Thermometer has a laser pointer which can be used for improved aim. The DT-8810 has a very fast sampling time and has a measuring range of -4°F to 518°F (-20°C to 270°C), with an accuracy of +/- 2% of reading. Its field of view is Narrow 8:1 (at 8" distance, measure 1"target). The DT-8810 has a fixed emissivity (0.95) that covers 90% of surface applications.
A red trigger-style button is used for capturing temperatures. On the front of this I/R thermometer are four small buttons, one red button for turning the laser on or off, two blue buttons in the center for switching between Fahrenheit and Celsius readings, and a yellow button for turning on a backlight for the display. The backlight is vital for viewing temperature readings during the low-light conditions of "ghost hunting" investigations. The DT-8810 also has a nice 'auto-hold' feature which is activated by releasing the temperature measuring trigger. The DT-8810 is powered by one 9V battery.

Dowsing Rods
Dowsing Rods

The dowsing rods we use are made of brass with copper handles for better conductivity. All four ends are capped for safety. Dowsing rods have many uses. They are primarily used by farmers to detect underground water sources. They are also used by genealogists to discover unmarked graves in cemeteries and have even been used to discover the sex of unborn babies. We as ghost hunters use them to detect the energy present when ghosts and spirits are in the area.

CAMERAS

Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV Handycam
Polaroid SX-70 Sonar OneStep Land Camera w/ ITT MagicFlash

The Polaroid SX-70 Sonar OneStep Land Camera was released in 1978. It uses Polaroid's Time-Zero film. It's autofocus is acquired through the use of a sonar rangefinder. The SX-70 did not come equipped with a built-in flash unit, so we use an ITT MagicFlash unit built specifically for the Polaroid SX-70.
Many nice pictures of various paranormal activity (such as orbs and vortexes) have been taken with Polaroid cameras, especially the Polaroid cameras which use the sonar focusing system. One theory is that the sonar waves may help in catching paranormal phenomena on film. Is it the sonar? Is it the Polaroid film? The jury is still out on the subject, but one thing everyone agrees on... there have been many strange "spirit" photos taken with Polaroid cameras.
